Month set aside to celebrate the contributions of gay and lesbian Americans.

June 1

Madaraka (Self-Rule) Day : Kenya.
Commemorates the beginning of self-rule in 1964.

June 2

Republic Day  : Italy.
Commemorates the founding of the Italian republic on June 2, 1946.

June 5

Constitution Day : Denmark.
Celebration of adoption of the constitutional monarchy in 1849.

  • Ascension Day : Eastern Orthodox & Coptic Orthodox Christian.
    Day set aside by Eastern Orthodox Christians to commemorate Jesus’ ascension into heaven.
June 6

National Day : Sweden.
Celebrates gaining independence from Denmark in 1523.

June 9

  • Shavuoth (Festival of Weeks) : Jewish.
    Marks the end of the seven weeks following Passover. Also commemorates Moses receiving the Torah and the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai.
June 12

Independence Day : Philippines.
Commemorates independence from Spain in 1898.

Independence Day (Observed): Russia.
Commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Sovereignty of the Russian Federation in 1991.

June 15

  • Pentecost : Eastern Orthodox & Coptic Orthodox Christian.
    Celebrated on this date by those following the Julian calendar.

June 17

Independence Day : Iceland.
Celebrates the declaration of independence from Denmark in 1944.

June 18

Evacuation Day : Egypt.
Celebrates the end of the Egyptian monarchy and the proclamation of the republic in 1952.

June 19

Juneteenth: African-American.
Celebrates the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. June 19th is the date in 1865, 2 1/2 years after the proclamation was issued, when slaves in Texas first learned about their freedom from soldiers in the Union army led by General Gordon Grange.

June 26

Independence Day: Somalia.
Celebrates the end of the British protectorate in 1960.

June 27

Stonewall Rebellion Anniversary : Gay/Lesbian.
Anniversary of the day in 1969 when police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village in New York City. Marks the beginning of the battle by gays and lesbian for equal rights in the United States.

June 30

  • Nagoshi-no-Oharai : Shinto.
    Purification ceremony, originally intended for the purification of agricultural workers to ward off mishaps; now one of the two days of national purification in Japan during the year.
