Constitution of the Slovak Republic : Slovakia.
Anniversary of the adoption of Slovakia’s constitution in 1992.

September 2

Independence Day : Vietnam.
Commemorates the surrender of the Japanese and the creation of the republic in 1945.

September 3

  • Labor Day : Canada & United States.
    Public holiday to honor all working people. Celebrated on the first Monday in September.

  • Janmashtami (Birth of Lord Krishna): Hindu.
    Hindu night festival. Celebrates the birthday of Krishna, the eight incarnation of the God Vishnu.
September 7

Independence Day : Brazil.
Celebrates the country’s declaration of independence from Portugal in 1822.

September 12

  • New Year : Coptic Orthodox Christian.
    Beginning of the year for the Coptic Orthodox Church of Egypt. For Coptic Christians, 2007 is the year 1724.

September 13 - 14

  • Rosh Hashanah (New Year) : Jewish.
    Beginning of the Jewish year of 5768; signifies the start of the Days of Awe or Repentance, a period which extends up to Yom Kippur. Conservative and Orthodox Jews celebrate both days.

September 13 - October 13

  • Ramadan (Month of Fasting) : Islam.
    Holiest month of the Muslim year, when observant Muslims fast, pray, and read the Qur’an.

September 15

Independence Day : Central American nations.
Commemorates the declaration of independence from Spain of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua in 1821.

September 15 – October 15

National Hispanic Heritage Month.
Celebration of Hispanic heritage.

September 16

Independence Day : Mexico.
Celebrates the beginning in 1810 of the Mexican fight for independence from Spain.

September 18

Independence Day : Chile.
Commemorates independence from Spain in 1818.

September 21

Referendum Day (Independence Day): Armenia.
Celebrates the reestablishment of Armenia as a free republic following a referendum in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

September 22

  • Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) : Jewish.
    The holiest of days for Jews—a day of repentance and forgiveness and the end of the ten-day period known as the Days of Awe or the Days of Repentance that start with Rosh Hashanah.
September 23

Unification of the Kingdom : Saudi Arabia.
Commemorates the formation of a united kingdom by King Ibd Saud in 1932.

September 24
  • Autumnal Equinox (Shubun-no-hi) : Japan, Shinto
    Celebration of the end of summer and the beginning of the fall harvest season. Day  is marked by prayers to ancestors and gravesites are cleaned and purified.
September 25

Chusok (Harvest Festival) : Korea.
Day of thanksgiving when people pay respects to their ancestors.

September 27

  • Sukkoth (Feast of Tabernacles): Jewish.
    Eight-day harvest festival named for the booths that are erected and hung with fruits and vegetables to recall the temporary dwellings used by the Hebrew during the time of their captivity in Egypt.
